Periodic table of mined minerals
An interactive periodic table of the 36 minerals we track: who mines each one, how much, who calls it critical and where the reserves sit, drawn as bars rising out of 58 element cells. Hover or tap a lit element.
What the table shows
Each lit cell is an element we follow as a mined mineral, from its ore to the products it ends up in. The bar above a cell is the metric you pick: the largest producing country's share of world mine output, world production on a log scale, how many of the 9 government critical-minerals lists we track include it, or how concentrated its reserves are. 19 of the 36 minerals have China as the largest producer at the stage USGS reports. Groups of elements light up together where the mineral is a family: rare earths take the lanthanide row plus scandium and yttrium; the platinum group takes six cells.

How to read it
Shares are of world mine production in the latest year USGS reports, by contained metal or by gross weight as USGS states it for that mineral. Reserves are USGS reserve estimates, which change as prices and exploration change. The critical-lists count treats each jurisdiction once (United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, India and China) across its current critical and strategic lists. Figures are rounded; the full story of each mineral, with sources, is one click away.
