Berkeley Pit

Berkeley Pit, United States. Closed, open pit, mining copper.

Why Berkeley Pit is famous

MBMG says the pit mined copper in the upper and central part of the Butte ore body between 1955 and 1982. Dewatering pumps were switched off on 22 April 1982, the pit lake formed in November 1983 when the Kelley mine water reached the pit bottom elevation, and more than 3,000 snow geese died on it in November 2016. Water is now treated under US EPA-led clean-up work.1,2
