Bodie mine

Bodie mine, United States. Heritage site, underground, mining gold.

Why Bodie is famous

Gold found in 1859 by W. S. Bodey and E. S. Taylor, and Bodey died in a blizzard that November. The Standard (Bunker Hill) strike in the mid-1870s made it a boomtown from 1877, with about 8,500 people in 1879. Decline began in 1881 and a fire struck in 1932. It is preserved in arrested decay as a state historic park.1,2
